Speech & Language Therapy
Speech and language therapy (SLT) is an essential part of a student’s week at Moor House and is integrated throughout their day. The SLT works with students individually, in groups, as well as in the classroom where lessons such as English are jointly planned and delivered.
Each therapist has a small caseload of children and gets to know their abilities and personalities well. The intensive therapy programme may focus on learning skills, developing strategies to communicate, as well as supporting the student to understand their own strengths and difficulties. Skills for talking in every day situations, language for lessons, social skills, friendship skills and independence skills are all key parts of a student’s programme.
Working with the adults in the child’s life is an important part of therapy at Moor House, including working closely with teaching staff, care staff (for those child who board) and regular communication with parents.
At Moor House, we use specialist methods where appropriate such as Electropalatography (EPG), the SHAPE CODINGTM system and signing. The department strives to keep up to date with new research and the team is continually developing therapy methods. We work with Universities and share methods developed at Moor House with other therapists through journals and presentations and in 2012 members of the department won a prestigious award for our research on therapy methods.
"Speech and Language Therapy has given our family the life long gift of being able to communicate with our son.
We are enormously thankful." Suzanne, Parent
Involving the student in decisions about their therapy programme is important, as is keeping track of their individual progress. Therapists monitor student progress on their individual targets on a termly basis, as well as overall results on wider assessments. Results gathered over several years show that students often make gains on standardised assessments even showing catch up with peers in some areas of language.
